Screening in Huntington Park can identify skin cancer so you can begin treatment early

If you've never had a professional skin cancer screening before, you may be nervous. It's understandable to be anxious about the unknown. Dr. Douglas Blose and his team want you to know screenings are nothing to fear. In fact, they are a critical component of identifying potential skin cancers early. This type of cancer is almost typically curable, especially if caught early.

Screening in Huntington Park and our other locations is an inspection of your skin with both the naked eye and with a dermoscope for a closer look. This device helps to magnify areas that Dr. Blose may catch, such as growths or spots, and to see structures more closely and changes to pigment that gives skin its color.

You should conduct self-examinations on a regular basis. That starts with knowing what to look for. Do you know your ABCDE's? Each of these letters stands for a different feature you should look for on your skin, starting with "A" for Asymmetry. One-half of a suspicious mole will often look different from the other half.

Cancers may also have irregular Borders. Areas that are a cause for concerns often have two or more Colors. A bigger Diameter of the growth is a greater cause for concern. Finally, if the area is Evolving — changing, or it starts to bleed or itch — that is also cause for concern.

While visual inspections are critical, Dr. Blose cannot make an official diagnosis until he receives the results of a biopsy. This process involves taking a small sample of tissue from a suspicious area.

With early detection and a proper course of treatment, the most common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma have a cure rate of around 95 percent. Even the deadliest of such cancers, melanoma, is known to have a high cure rate if it is detected before the growth spreads to other parts of the body.
